Event Details

Professor Jamal has directed a number of major studies focused on understanding the Arab and Muslim American experience.  Other panelists for this conversation will come from the local community.  We hope to have a discussion that bridges Professor Jamal’s broader perspective with the local community’s focus.  One of the goals for this series iss to explore the diversity in the Middle East and broader Muslim world and one means might be to turn the lens on ourselves and examine the diversity of the Muslim and Arab experience in the United States.

Amaney A. Jamal is Associate Professor of Politics at Princeton University, where she  directs the Workshop on Arab Political Development.  She is the author of several books on democratization
and the politics of civic engagement in the Arab World including Barriers to Democracy: The Other Side of Social Capital in Palestine and the Arab World (2008).  As well, Professor Jamal has written on Muslim and Arab American patterns of civic engagement and led several major research projects on these issues including, the Arab Barometer Project, the Pew Research Center Project focusing on Islam in America, and the Detroit Arab American Study. Her forthcoming book from Princeton University Press is entitled, Of Empires and Citizens: Pro-American Democracy or No Democracy at All.
